How many miles distance running should I train for before switching over to speed training?
I read that long distance runners and sprinters have different muscles due to their different training, which implies that training long distance running too much can hurt one's sprinting. I want to focus primarily on speed, but I also want to have great endurance. So, where's the cutoff point?
If I train for two mile runs, is that too much?
I was thinking of alternating each day between distance and speed training, phasing out the distance training eventually.
You can't be long distance runner and a sprint athlete. Unfortuately you need to choose.
Long distance running does affect other muscles than sprinting and are therefore making you slower when you do sprints.
The important muscles in sprint are the thighs and hamstrings.
In long distance you need to have all the muscles work together to be able to have endurance.
You need to contact a professional coach to work out a proper program for you - going it alone is not a good plan, there are many online guides to running that are free and I use them for my athletes.
