Burlesque is theatrical entertainment of broad and parodic humor, which usually consists of comic skits (and sometimes a strip tease).
Prior to Burlesque becoming associated with striptease, it was a form of musical and theatrical parody in which an opera or piece of classical theatre is adapted in a broad, often risqueéstyle very different from that
for which it was originally known.Some authors assert that the first
instance of burlesque occurred in the Commedia dell'arte of 16th
century Italy. However, the first wide spread use of the word was as a
literary term in 17th century Italy and France where it referred to a
grotesque imitation of the dignified or pathetic.
In the 19th century and 20th century England the word became a
term for a dramatic production which ridicules stage conventions. In
20th century America, the word became associated with a variety
show in which strip tease is the chief attraction.
A "striptease" or "exotic dance" is a form of erotic entertainment, usually a dance, in which the performer, known as a "stripper", gradually undresses, in a teasing and sexually suggestive manner, to music. The "teasing" part involves the slowness of undressing, while
the audience is eager to see more nudity. Delay tactics include
additional clothes being removed or putting clothes or hands in front of
just undressed body parts, such as breasts or between the legs.
Emphasis is on the act of undressing along with sexually suggestive
movement, rather than the state of being undressed.
In the past, the performance often finished as soon as the
undressing was finished, though today striptease artists usually
continue dancing whilst in a state of nudity. The costume the stripper
wears before disrobing can be an important part of the act. These
could be fantasy themed: such as a schoolgirl uniform, maid's dress,
policewoman's outfit etc.
Along with physical attractiveness and appropriate clothing, the
main asset and tool used by the exotic dancer in recent years is the
stripper pole. The terms "exotic dancer" and "exotic dance" can have
different meanings in different parts of the world and depending on
context.
In a non-erotic sense, the word "exotic" applies to the fact that something is out of the ordinary or perceived by spectators as unusual.
It can also apply to those dancers who master a rare or largely lost art
form, including whirling dervishes, shaman dancers and religious
dancers. Middle Eastern dance is often referred to as exotic dance in
this way, though its use of hip/pelvic movement and isolation often
results in its unfortunate conflation with exotic dance in the erotic
sense.
In an erotic sense, the term "exotic dance" is used as a euphemism
for erotic dancing. While there is overlap, they are not the same. The
origin of this erotic interpretation is similar to that of the term massage
parlor, in that a description for a non-sexual service was co-opted to
describe a sexual service.
